CASRA is pleased to announce its Youth Referee Scholarship Program for 2010. The purpose of this program is to reward youth referees for their contribution to CASRA and to the soccer community in general, encourage our young referees in their academic careers, and foster a life long interest in soccer officiating. The 2010 award will be for $500.00. It can be used for tuition, books, or other academic-related expenses. Up to twenty awards will be granted, depending on the qualifications of the applicant pool. Awards are limited to two times per student.
To be considered for a scholarship award, you must meet the following minimum qualifications:
1. Be USSF-certified referee of Grade 8 or higher and a member of CASRA in good standing for at least two years prior to the award date (December 2009).
2. Be either a high school senior in 2009 or in the first two (2) years of post-secondary education.
3. Be no older that 22 in the year the award would be received.
Applicants must complete the Application Form attached and include at least two personal references (i) from a CASRA assignor and (ii) from one more senior CASRA referees or mentors.
The Youth Referee Scholarship Committee will make the awards to youth referees who have shown a commitment to becoming better referees and to refereeing games for CASRA. The Committee will use a combination of
- the number of CASRA travel league and high school games and tournaments the applicant has officiated over a two-year period (rec games not included)
- demonstrated dedication to refereeing, such as attending upgrade or advanced clinics, obtaining a Grade 7 or higher, having assessments (informal or upgrade), participating in a CASRA mentoring program
- professional approach to officiating, including proper attire, being on-time, not turning back games unless necessary
- personal references from a CASRA assignor, senior referee, or mentor
- Applicant’s personal statement about improving as a referee.
While not a requirement, serving as referee or assistant referee in 25 or more travel league games (NCSL,WAGS, BBSL and MPSL) and/or public or private high school games assigned by CASRA and several tournaments assigned by CASRA will be the level of commitment to CASRA that the Committee would like to see.
Note: There will be a number of tournaments and a large number of league games available during the Fall season. This is an opportunity to increase your game count. Contact your CASRA assignor.
You will receive actual payment of the award under the following conditions. You must be 22 years of age or younger at time of receipt. If you are a high school senior, you must provide evidence of your attendance at a post-secondary institution (college or accredited professional school) once you have arrived there. If you are currently enrolled, you must provide evidence that you are in good academic standing.
You must submit a completed application form to the Chairman of the Scholarship Selection
Committee to be received or postmarked no later than November 24, 2009. Applications received after this date will not be considered.
